Málaga, September 15th 2025. The historic Andalucian mountain estate ‘Lagar Hurtado’, located in the district of Jaboneros, in the Montes de Malaga, is offered for sale by Beauchamp Estates., with a full suite of approved plans, permits and grants in place.  The 766,587 sq. m estate, located in a protected natural park with exceptional panoramic views over the mountains and down to Málaga and the coast, offers a rare and unique opportunity to create one of Spain’s finest private estates and vineyards, or a world class, destination eco and wellness resort.

Lagar Hurtado”, known locally as Hotel Cortijo de la Reina, dates from the 17th century, when Cristóbal de Villarroel purchased the land and created Lagar Hurtado and its vineyards. The property was later inherited Antonio and Lázaro Torrijos, ancestors of General José María Torrijos, before being acquired in the late 19th century by the Spanish painter José Gärtner.

The outstanding natural beauty of Montes de Málaga, Spain’s largest wine producing region in the 19th century surpassing Rioja, attracted artists and the gentry, with a young Pablo Ruiz Picasso being a regular visitor in the summers of 1895-1897, staying at the neighboring Lagar Los Llanes, owned by his god parents, and visiting his uncle, Baldermero Ghiara who helped support his work, at the mill he owned in nearby Hacienda El Lince. During this time the young Picasso, already a student of Escola de la Llotja by 1896, created various paintings of the landscape. Of all his works created during his summer visits to Jaboneros, Mountains of Málaga is considered to be one of the very best from this period, perfectly capturing the majesty of the natural setting around Lagar Hurtado.

Lagar Hurtado, comprising the principal historic building, the 36 room Hotel Cortijo de La Reina, the 5-bedroom Villa Mirador, and the 232,782 sq m plot in which they are situated, was purchased by the Mathiven Group in 2016, after the hotel and villa closed.

Recognizing the exceptional aspect, views and location, within a natural park, combined with close proximity to excellent transport links, Mathiven Group saw the unprecedented potential to create an eco-estate, restoring existing buildings and reviving vini-culture, or, with purchase of neighboring land, to create a world class agri-based private estate or eco-resort and well-being retreat, that could rival such global destinations as Island Records founder Chris Blackwell’s Golden Eye, Oracabessa in Jamaica, Sublime Comporta, Portugal, or Son Bunyola Mallorca, part of Virgin Limited Edition, which includes founder Richard Branson’s Necker Island.

Since the initial acquisition of Lagar Hurtado Mathiven Group have purchased two neighboring plots, bringing the total land volume to 766,587 sq m, creating an optimal sized estate.

Following consolidation of the land Mathiven brought together an exceptional team of experienced professionals to realize plans for their vision of Lagar Hurtado while remaining true to the ethos and values of eco-development, investing in people, and regenerative development and tourism.

The proposals, now fully approved by the Spanish national and regional authorities with all necessary permits in place, allow for the regeneration and expansion of the main hotel/building up to 10,000 sqm, renovation of Villa Mirador and pool, development of a new villa up to 300 sq m west of the existing main buildings, and south east of the main buildings the regeneration of an old farm house, Finca Postigo, and further new buildings up to 300 sq m.

Approved plans also provide for upgraded infrastructure, addressing access, energy, water and waste management, that along with excellent build quality and sympathetic development will ensure Lagar Hurtado achieves ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’ (LEED) accreditation. Permits include a unified environmental authorisation from the Andalusian Regional Government, and a building permit, along with approved regional and energy subsidies of up to €5.9 million.

Erik Holmgren Head of Beauchamp Estates Marbella comments, “Opportunities like Lagar Hurtado are exceptionally rare. The combination of a prime position, overlooking Málaga, within protected natural parkland, proximity to transport, and full permissions already in place, makes this one of the most compelling development opportunities in southern Spain.

“For existing eco-tourism and hospitality operators seeking to expand in the region the principal obstacles and challenges around permissions and permits that exist in all protected landscapes have already been obtained, removing the usual long delays in progressing to build and delivery. For investors seeking a unique opportunity, in an expanding sector, that is proceedable, with the option of a locally based partner then Lagar Hurtado is also ideal and Mathiven an excellent, experienced local partner.”

In addition to the primary accommodation offer, Lagar Hurtado is also well placed for developing complementary activities, such as wine tourism, artisan olive oil products, wellness, glamping, equestrian facilities and special events.

Market and Opportunities

The sale of Lagar Hurtado comes at a time when Malaga is experiencing a boom in the luxury accommodation sector. According to recent data, the province closed 2024 with a hotel investment of €269 million, highlighting the acquisition of 18 hotels (2,173 rooms).

The demand for high-end accommodation in Malaga, and particularly the wider Andalucía region, has been increasing, driven by growth of tourism and travelers’ search for unique, sustainable, experiences, where tourism regenerates rather than erodes.

Lagar Hurtado is located just 20 minutes from Malaga’s Old Town and 35 minutes from the international airport.

Vendors Mathiven Group are offering Lagar Hurtado for sale through their sole appointed agents Beauchamp Estates, at an asking price of €14million, including land, properties, designs and plans, licenses and grants, OR are open to a partnership with a suitable investor, private or corporate, subject to terms, to realize the full 30-70million (GDV) scheme.
